Ogden Dentist Video #1:
What is Calculus in Dentistry?
In this video, Dr. Jim Ellis, DDS (a dentist in Ogden Utah) discusses what calculus is in dentistry.
Calculus is simply hard water stain, that’s all it is. There are two kinds of stuff that can get on your teeth.
- The first kind of stuff you can get off easily with a toothbrush and toothpaste in your home.
- The second kind of stuff is the stuff that, when you come to a dentist office and get your teeth professionally cleaned, is the stuff that’s a little more tenacious, the stuff that needs to be scraped off your teeth by the dentist or the hygienist. That is calculus.
Calculus is basically the minerals leftover from your saliva. In our saliva, we have minerals and it’s the minerals left behind that bond onto the teeth, and then, once there are deposits on the teeth, bacteria can also embed themselves into that, and so it’s a combination of basically the minerals leftover from your saliva and bacteria that would join in with those hard water stains and be left behind. There’s no way you can get them off by yourself, a professional cleaning is the only way that they can be removed.
