Ogden Dentist Video #13:
Is Nitrous Oxide Safe?
In this video, Dr. Jim Ellis, DDS (a dentist in Ogden, Utah) discusses if the Nitrous Oxide is safe.
Nitrous oxide (known as laughing gas or sweet air) is absolutely safe. Scientists don’t actually know what it does. It depresses your central nervous system slightly. It does not take away any pain, it just makes you kind of care less about the pain, that’s really what it does. The only people that we do not recommend it for are people with some respiratory obstructions, severe asthma, things of that nature, and also pregnancy.
There have been some studies shown that there’s an increased risk for birth defects for pregnancy. We DO NOT recommend it during pregnancy. If you’re someone that absolutely must have the nitrous, and you have dental concerns that are not that pressing, we actually recommend that you wait until you deliver the baby. But as far as anyone else, we use nitrous on the elderly, on children, or just on the “dental-phobic” patient who might need a little help.
Hopefully, this video has answered your question. If you have any other questions, we have a whole library of videos. If there is something that you have that hasn’t been answered, you can feel free to give me a call at (801) 783-3490. Thank you so much and have a good day.
